Does MMR vaccination treat rubella?

The MMR vaccine prepares the immune system to respond to measles, mumps and rubella before exposure. It cannot cure rubella or reliably stop symptoms after infection has begun. Rubella can cause a fine rash, fever, sore throat, swollen glands and joint aches; some people have mild or no symptoms. A rash has many possible causes, so a clinician may recommend testing and precautions rather than relying on appearance alone.

Contact a clinician if rubella is possible, especially if you are pregnant or have been near someone who is pregnant. Avoid close contact with pregnant people until you receive advice, because rubella infection during pregnancy can harm an unborn baby. Rest, drink fluids and use only medicines considered suitable for you. Do not attend work, school or gatherings until a clinician explains when it is safe. Once recovered, review your MMR record; vaccination is for future protection, not treatment of the current illness.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, severe dehydration or rapidly worsening symptoms. Get prompt medical advice for a new rash with fever, suspected exposure during pregnancy, or symptoms in a person with a weakened immune system. Mention possible rubella before attending a clinic so staff can reduce exposure to others.
