Does MMR vaccination treat mumps?

The MMR vaccine trains the immune system to recognise measles, mumps and rubella before exposure. It cannot remove the mumps virus from someone who is already infected or reliably stop symptoms after they begin. Mumps may cause swollen, tender salivary glands near the cheeks or jaw, fever, headache, tiredness and pain when chewing or swallowing. Other illnesses can look similar, so symptoms alone do not confirm the diagnosis.

If mumps is possible, contact a clinician for advice and avoid close contact with others until you have guidance, because mumps can spread through respiratory droplets and saliva. Rest, drink fluids and choose soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Do not share cups, utensils or towels. A clinician can advise about testing, symptom relief and whether household or close contacts need vaccination advice. Check your vaccination record when you are well; vaccination remains useful for future prevention even though it is not treatment for the current illness.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck, fainting, repeated vomiting, severe dehydration or rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly for marked swelling, severe pain, symptoms involving the testicles, or illness during pregnancy. Keep away from vulnerable people while seeking advice if mumps is suspected.
