Does MMR vaccination treat measles?

The MMR vaccine trains the immune system to recognise measles and other viruses covered by the vaccine. It cannot remove measles virus once an illness is established. Suspected measles needs a call before attending in person so staff can reduce exposure to others.

Contact a clinician promptly and provide the exposure timing, vaccination history, pregnancy status, and immune conditions. A clinician can explain whether vaccination or another preventive option may be appropriate after exposure. Until advised, avoid close contact with infants, pregnant people, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Rest and drink fluids.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, severe drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, dehydration, or a child who is unusually difficult to wake. Contact a healthcare professional for suspected measles, especially during pregnancy or reduced immunity. Do not go unannounced to a waiting room.
