Does missed miscarriage cause bleeding in early pregnancy?

A missed miscarriage occurs when a pregnancy has stopped developing but the body has not yet expelled the pregnancy tissue. Some people have spotting or heavier bleeding, while others have no bleeding at first. Cramps may be absent or mild, and pregnancy symptoms can change gradually.

Use pads rather than tampons while waiting for advice so the amount and pattern are easier to observe.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, marked dizziness, fever, or pain felt at the shoulder tip. These symptoms can require prompt assessment, including to check for ectopic pregnancy or significant blood loss.
