Does Mirena stop your period?

Mirena releases a progestogen inside the uterus. This can thin the uterine lining, so there may be less tissue to shed during a period. Bleeding and spotting can be irregular after insertion, then often settle into a new pattern over time.

A period stopping with Mirena is not the same as menopause. The device can also be used to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding, but a clinician should assess bleeding that is new, persistent, or unusual for you.

Keep a simple record of bleeding, cramps, and any pregnancy symptoms. Check the device strings only if your clinician has shown you how. If you cannot feel them, feel a hard plastic part, or think the device has moved, arrange a review and use backup contraception as advised.

Seek prompt care for severe pelvic pain, fever, heavy bleeding, faintness, or a positive pregnancy test with an intrauterine device. Arrange assessment for persistent unusual bleeding or symptoms that suggest infection or displacement.

Ask what bleeding pattern is expected for you, when to review ongoing spotting, and whether Mirena is suitable for your contraception or heavy bleeding goals. Mention conditions such as fibroids, adenomyosis, or endometrial problems.
