Does middle ear infection cause fever?

A middle ear infection triggers inflammation in the space behind the eardrum. The immune response can raise body temperature, sometimes alongside earache, irritability, poor sleep, reduced appetite, or a blocked ear. Fever may be absent, especially in adults, so its absence does not rule out an ear problem.

Many illnesses can cause fever, including respiratory infections. The temperature reading, duration, age, general behaviour, and other symptoms matter more than fever by itself.

Offer regular fluids and allow rest. Check the temperature with a reliable thermometer and follow the product instructions for any age-appropriate fever or pain medicine. Avoid aspirin for children unless a clinician specifically recommends it. A clinician can examine the eardrum and decide whether observation or treatment is appropriate.

Seek urgent help if the person is difficult to wake, confused, struggling to breathe, dehydrated, having a seizure, or develops a stiff neck, severe headache, or swelling behind the ear. Babies, people with weakened immunity, and anyone who is rapidly worsening need prompt medical advice.
