Does microneedling treat atrophic scars?

Atrophic scars are depressions caused by reduced support in the skin. Microneedling makes controlled microscopic channels in the surface, which can trigger a wound-healing response and encourage collagen remodelling. Over time, this may make shallow acne scars, surgical scars, or other indented scars look smoother. It does not erase scar tissue, and deep or tethered scars may need a different approach or a combination of treatments.

The scar's age, depth, location, colour, skin type, and tendency to form raised scars all affect suitability. Temporary redness, swelling, sensitivity, dryness, or pinpoint bleeding can occur after treatment. Pigment changes, infection, prolonged irritation, or worsening scarring are less common but possible.

Arrange an assessment before booking a session so the clinician can identify the scar type and check for active acne, eczema, infection, or a cold sore near the area. Follow instructions about pausing irritating products, retinoids, or medicines that increase bleeding risk; do not stop prescribed medicine without medical guidance.

After treatment, use the recommended gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sun protection. Avoid picking, intense heat, swimming, and unapproved exfoliants while the skin is recovering. Improvement develops gradually as collagen changes, so take consistent photographs in similar lighting rather than judging the result immediately.

Contact the treating clinic if pain, warmth, swelling, redness, drainage, or crusting is increasing instead of settling, or if you develop fever or spreading redness. Seek prompt medical advice for blistering, marked colour change, or an allergic reaction. An untreated infection or active inflammatory skin condition should be assessed before another session.

Ask which scars are being targeted, what degree of improvement is realistic for their depth, how many sessions may be considered, and what recovery plan applies to your skin. Also ask whether another treatment would be more suitable, how the device is sterilised, and what signs should prompt a review.
