Does microdiscectomy treat cauda equina syndrome?

Cauda equina syndrome occurs when the bundle of nerves at the lower end of the spinal canal is severely compressed. A disc fragment is one possible cause. During microdiscectomy, a surgeon removes the fragment and creates more room for the affected nerves. The operation addresses the pressure from that disc; it does not treat every possible cause of cauda equina syndrome, and the exact procedure depends on scans and examination findings.

Warning signs can include new difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, or worsening weakness in both legs. Nerve recovery cannot be predicted from symptoms alone, so waiting for a routine appointment is unsafe when these signs appear.

If cauda equina syndrome is suspected, attend an emergency department immediately or call local emergency services. Do not drive yourself if weakness, numbness, or severe pain makes travel unsafe. Tell the team when the bladder, bowel, saddle numbness, or leg symptoms began, and mention any recent back injury or known disc problem.

Emergency clinicians may examine leg strength and sensation, check bladder function, and arrange urgent spinal imaging. If compression is confirmed, a spine specialist will discuss decompression, which may include microdiscectomy.

Seek emergency care now for new urinary retention, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness between the legs, or rapidly worsening leg weakness. Severe back pain with any of these changes also needs immediate assessment. These symptoms are red flags because delayed nerve decompression can affect bladder, bowel, sexual, and leg function.

Ask which finding on the scan is compressing the nerves, whether microdiscectomy is the proposed operation, how quickly it should happen, and what nerve functions need monitoring after treatment.
