Does metformin for PCOS treat anovulation?

Anovulation means an ovary does not release an egg during a cycle. In PCOS, disrupted hormone signalling and insulin resistance can interfere with follicle development and ovulation. Metformin improves insulin sensitivity, which may help hormone signalling and allow ovulation to resume in some people. The effect is variable and may be limited when anovulation has another cause.

Having a bleed is not the same as releasing an egg. If pregnancy is desired, a clinician can assess ovulation and discuss treatments specifically intended to induce it. PCOS care may also address irregular periods, metabolic health, and symptoms such as excess hair or acne.

Use metformin only under medical supervision and follow the prescribed instructions. Record bleeding and possible ovulation signs, but do not rely on symptoms alone to confirm ovulation. Discuss pregnancy plans, other medicines, kidney health, and side effects. A review can determine whether metformin alone is suitable or whether another approach is needed.

Arrange review when periods remain absent, pregnancy is not occurring as expected, or side effects continue. Seek prompt advice for a possible pregnancy, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or very heavy bleeding. Urgent assessment is needed for faintness or marked weakness with bleeding.

Ask how ovulation will be confirmed, how long the current plan should be tried, whether another cause has been excluded, and which fertility options may follow if ovulation does not return.
