Does metastatic breast cancer cause persistent bone pain?

Short answer
Persistent Bone Pain is a common presentation of Metastatic Breast Cancer, but pain alone cannot identify its cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible pain pattern
- Deep or aching pain that may persist, worsen at night, or affect movement.
- Assessment
- The cause is assessed from symptoms, examination, medical history, and tests when needed.
What this can mean
When breast cancer spreads to bone, cancer cells can disturb the normal balance of bone being formed and broken down. This may create a deep, aching or throbbing pain in the back, hips, ribs, pelvis, or limbs. It can remain in one area, worsen with movement, or become more noticeable at night. Bone involvement can also weaken a bone, although pain may have many other explanations, including an injury, arthritis, muscle strain, or another health condition.
A clinician assesses the pattern, location, duration, and effect on movement, alongside your breast cancer history and examination. Imaging and other tests may be used when needed. A new symptom deserves assessment without assuming that it confirms spread.
What to do next
Tell your oncology team about new, persistent, worsening, or repeatedly returning pain. Note where it is, when it began, whether it wakes you, and what makes it better or worse. Mention reduced movement, tenderness, weakness, numbness, or a recent fall. Use pain medicines only as directed by your care team, because kidney, stomach, blood-count, and treatment considerations can affect the safest choice. Gentle movement may help some people, but avoid activities that sharply increase pain until you have advice.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe back or neck pain, new leg or arm weakness, numbness, trouble walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These symptoms can signal pressure on the spinal cord. Get prompt care for pain after a minor injury when a bone may be fragile, or for pain with sudden inability to use a limb. Contact your oncology team quickly if pain is escalating or preventing sleep, eating, or ordinary activities.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what causes should be considered, whether an examination or imaging is appropriate, which pain-relief options fit your treatment, and which changes should prompt an urgent call. You can also ask how to protect painful areas during daily activities and whether a palliative-care specialist could help with symptom control.
Questions people ask
Does every bone pain symptom mean breast cancer has spread?
No. Bone pain has many possible causes, so a clinician must assess persistent or changing pain in context.
Can metastatic breast cancer cause back pain?
Yes. Spread to bones in the spine can cause back pain, and new weakness, numbness, walking difficulty, or bladder or bowel changes needs urgent assessment.
