Does mesothelioma cause shortness of breath?

Mesothelioma can affect the lining around the lungs. Thickening, inflammation or fluid in that space may limit how fully the lung expands, leading to breathlessness, cough or chest discomfort. The severity can vary with activity and with the amount of fluid or other changes present. Shortness of breath is also common with asthma, infection, heart conditions and other lung problems, so it does not identify mesothelioma by itself. Arrange a medical assessment for new, persistent or worsening breathlessness. Tell the clinician when it started, whether it occurs at rest or with activity, and whether you have cough, chest pain, fever, weight change or past asbestos exposure. Sit upright, loosen tight clothing and pace activity while waiting for advice. Do not assume the cause from one symptom; examination and chest investigations may be needed to understand what is happening.

Seek emergency help for sudden severe breathlessness, inability to speak in full sentences, blue or grey lips, severe chest pain, fainting, new confusion or coughing blood. Rapid deterioration also needs urgent assessment. If symptoms are gradual but interfere with ordinary activity or sleep, arrange prompt clinical review.
