Does mental health assessment treat burnout?

Short answer
A mental health assessment does not cure burnout on its own, but it can clarify what is happening and shape a practical recovery plan.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is explored
The clinician may ask about workload, control over tasks, rest, sleep, concentration, mood, physical symptoms and how long difficulties have been present. They may distinguish burnout linked to ongoing work stress from depression, anxiety, a sleep problem or a physical illness, because these can overlap and need different care. The discussion can identify pressures at work or home, current coping methods and support that could be changed safely.
Building recovery support
Prepare examples of what has changed, such as dread before work, reduced concentration, irritability or exhaustion that does not improve with ordinary rest. Discuss temporary adjustments, boundaries, leave, sleep routines, counselling and treatment for any coexisting condition. Recovery often depends on changing the stressor as well as strengthening coping skills, so include your workplace or trusted support person when appropriate. Book follow-up if symptoms continue or your plan is difficult to maintain.
When to seek prompt help
Get urgent help if you have thoughts of suicide, feel unable to keep yourself safe, develop severe confusion or cannot function because of exhaustion. Arrange prompt medical review for persistent chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness or other new physical symptoms rather than assuming they are burnout. A sudden major change in mood, behaviour or sleep also deserves assessment.
Useful questions
Ask how burnout is being distinguished from depression or anxiety, what changes at work may help, whether counselling is suitable, how rest should be structured and when progress should be reviewed.

Questions people ask
Is burnout treated only with time off?
Not always. Rest can help, but recovery may also require workload changes, boundaries, psychological support or care for another condition.
Can burnout and depression occur together?
They can overlap. An assessment helps examine mood, motivation, sleep and functioning so the support plan fits the full picture.
