Does mental health assessment treat ADHD?

An assessment may review attention, impulsivity, activity levels, organisation, emotional regulation, and how these affect home, education, or work. The clinician may ask about childhood patterns, family observations, sleep, anxiety, mood, learning difficulties, substance use, and physical health. Similar difficulties can have different causes, so context matters.

Assessment findings can lead to an ADHD diagnosis, another explanation, or a recommendation for further evaluation. Treatment may involve education, behavioural strategies, environmental adjustments, psychological support, or prescribed medicine. Follow-up helps check benefits, side effects, and changing needs.

Collect examples of missed deadlines, forgetfulness, restlessness, lost items, or difficulty completing tasks across different settings. School reports, workplace feedback, and observations from someone who knows you may be useful. Bring your medication and health history, and describe strengths as well as difficulties.

Arrange prompt care if attention or impulsivity creates immediate danger, severe inability to function, medication side effects, or thoughts of self-harm. Seek emergency help for a crisis, serious injury, severe confusion, or inability to stay safe.

Ask what assessment process is available, what information to bring, and which conditions may resemble ADHD. Discuss support while waiting, treatment choices if ADHD is confirmed, follow-up arrangements, and what symptoms should trigger an earlier review.
