Does meniscus tear cause knee clicking and grinding?

A torn meniscus can alter how the knee surfaces move, producing clicking, catching or grinding sensations. Most people with Meniscus Tear notice knee clicking and grinding, but a noise by itself does not identify its cause. Symptoms such as swelling, pain along the joint line, limited bending or locking provide more useful context for an examination.

Notice when the sound occurs and whether it comes with pain, swelling, giving way or a blocked knee. Reduce activities that repeatedly provoke symptoms while keeping comfortable movement. A clinician can examine the knee and decide whether imaging or physiotherapy is appropriate. Do not try to force a clicking knee straight if it feels locked.

Arrange an assessment for ongoing clicking with pain, recurrent swelling, instability or reduced movement. Seek prompt care if the knee becomes stuck, you cannot bear weight after an injury, swelling appears suddenly, or the leg becomes unusually hot and red.

Ask whether the examination suggests a meniscus problem or another source of noise, which activities are safe, and whether imaging or rehabilitation would clarify the cause.
