Does meningococcal vaccination treat meningococcal disease?

The vaccine trains the immune system to recognise particular meningococcal bacteria before exposure. Protection depends on which meningococcal group the vaccine covers, and vaccination cannot remove bacteria or reverse inflammation once illness has begun. A vaccinated person can still need assessment if symptoms develop.

Meningococcal disease can progress quickly and may involve meningitis or a bloodstream infection. Symptoms can include fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, confusion, marked sleepiness, sensitivity to light, or a rash that does not fade when pressed.

Treat suspected meningococcal disease as an emergency. Contact emergency medical services or go to the nearest emergency department immediately; do not wait for a vaccine appointment or for every symptom to appear. Clinicians may arrange tests and start antibiotics promptly when the illness is suspected.

Keep a record of recent vaccination, medicines, allergies, and close contacts if this can be done without delaying care. People who have had close exposure may be offered preventive antibiotics or vaccination according to clinical advice.

Seek emergency help for fever with a severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, collapse, breathing difficulty, seizures, rapidly worsening illness, or a purple or non-fading rash. Infants may instead have poor feeding, unusual irritability, a high-pitched cry, or a bulging soft spot. Do not rely on vaccination status to judge urgency.

Ask which meningococcal groups your vaccine covers, whether you need additional doses, and what symptoms should prompt emergency care. If there has been close contact with a confirmed case, ask whether you need preventive medicine and whether household or intimate contacts should be assessed.
