Does medicated shampoo treatment treat scalp psoriasis?

Scalp psoriasis can produce thick, adherent scale, redness, itching, and soreness. A medicated shampoo is used on the scalp rather than only on the hair. Its ingredients may soften or lift scale, reduce inflammation, or limit the growth of organisms that can worsen irritation. The right product depends on the thickness of the plaques and the condition of your scalp.

Shampoo may be useful as part of a treatment plan, especially when scale covers a broad area. However, plaques at the hairline, behind the ears, or on the neck may need a lotion, foam, solution, or another prescribed medicine because shampoo may not remain on those areas long enough.

Follow the product directions or your clinician’s instructions for how often to apply the shampoo, how long to leave it in contact with the scalp, and how thoroughly to rinse. Part the hair so the product reaches the skin, then massage gently with fingertips. Scratching or scraping off scale can cause breaks in the skin and more irritation.

Improvement in scale does not necessarily mean the underlying inflammation has fully settled.

Arrange a dermatology review if the scalp is painful, bleeding, crusted, draining, or becoming difficult to comb. Seek prompt medical advice for sudden widespread redness, swelling around the eyes, fever, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Hair shedding can occur when scalp inflammation is active; ask for an assessment if it is marked or continues after the flare improves.

A clinician can check whether the diagnosis is scalp psoriasis and decide whether shampoo alone is enough. Persistent plaques may need a different topical medicine or treatment for psoriasis elsewhere on the body.
