Does medical management of miscarriage treat missed miscarriage?

A missed miscarriage is a pregnancy loss in which the pregnancy has stopped developing but the body has not yet passed the tissue. Medical management uses medicine prescribed by a clinician to start or support this process. Cramping and vaginal bleeding are expected as the uterus empties. The care team may arrange follow-up to check that treatment has worked and to discuss other options if tissue remains.

Take the medicine exactly as prescribed and make sure you know when to expect bleeding, how to manage discomfort and how follow-up will be arranged. Have access to sanitary pads, fluids and support from someone you trust if possible. Do not take additional medicines without checking they are suitable. Your clinician can explain what to do if bleeding does not begin or symptoms continue.

Contact your care team urgently for bleeding that is becoming very heavy, severe or worsening pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, dizziness or weakness. Seek emergency help for fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty or feeling seriously unwell. Follow-up matters even when bleeding settles, because your clinician may need to confirm that the miscarriage is complete.
