Does measles cause swollen glands?

Swollen glands are lymph nodes responding to activity in the immune system. With measles, swelling may be noticed in the neck or around the head, although the exact pattern varies. The nodes can feel tender, and they may remain enlarged for a while after other symptoms improve. Swollen glands are not specific to measles; many infections can cause them. A clinician considers the full symptom pattern, exposure history, vaccination history, and examination findings.

If measles is possible, call a healthcare service before visiting in person because it spreads easily. Rest, drink fluids, and avoid sharing towels, cups, or close face-to-face contact. Use pain or fever medicine only as directed and suitable for the person taking it. Keep a note of when the fever, rash, cough, and gland swelling began, as this helps with assessment.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, unusual sleepiness, confusion, a seizure, severe dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness. Seek prompt advice for a baby, pregnancy, or reduced immunity after possible measles exposure. A gland that is very painful, red, rapidly enlarging, or associated with difficulty swallowing also needs medical review.

Ask whether testing or isolation advice is needed, how to protect household members, how long gland swelling may last, and which symptoms should trigger urgent care. Confirm which medicines are safe for the person who is unwell.
