Does mastitis cause painful breastfeeding?

Inflamed breast tissue can feel sore when your baby latches, when milk flows or when the breast is touched. You may notice a tender, warm or firm area, and sometimes feverishness or fatigue. Nipple pain can also come from positioning, shallow latch, cracks or another breast problem. Pain during a feed therefore needs context rather than being treated as proof of one condition.

Keep feeding or expressing milk if you can do so comfortably, and seek help to check your baby’s latch and position. Start on the less painful side if that helps milk release, then offer the affected side as tolerated. Avoid tight bras and forceful breast massage. Rest, drink fluids and ask a pharmacist or clinician about pain relief that suits breastfeeding.

Arrange prompt medical advice if pain is worsening, you have a hot or swollen breast, fever, nipple damage, or difficulty feeding your baby. Get help if symptoms fail to improve or you feel increasingly unwell. Urgent care is appropriate for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty or a rapidly worsening illness.
