Does mastitis cause fever after birth?

Mastitis is inflammation of breast tissue and can trigger a whole-body response, including feeling hot, chilled, tired or feverish. It may occur during the early weeks of breastfeeding, but breast inflammation can happen at other times too. Fever after birth also has other possible causes, including infection elsewhere, so a breast symptom pattern and an assessment help guide the next step.

Rest, drink fluids and feed or express milk as comfortably as possible. Avoid abruptly stopping milk removal and avoid deep massage, which can worsen inflammation. Wear loose clothing and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for comfort. Contact a healthcare professional promptly for fever with a painful, red or swollen breast, or if you feel worse or do not begin improving. Postpartum fever also warrants advice when there is pelvic or abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge, pain passing urine, wound changes or breast symptoms. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty or feeling seriously ill.
