Does mastectomy treat breast cancer in men?

Breast cancer in men often starts behind the nipple or within the small amount of breast tissue beneath the chest skin. A mastectomy removes that tissue and may be combined with surgery to assess lymph nodes in the armpit. The surgeon will discuss whether the nipple and surrounding skin can remain, based on the tumour’s position.

Surgery may be followed by medicines, radiotherapy, or both. Decisions are guided by the tumour’s size, lymph-node findings, hormone receptors, other laboratory features, and whether there is evidence outside the breast. A firm lump, nipple discharge, skin change, or nipple inversion needs assessment even though several non-cancer conditions can cause breast symptoms in men.

Ask for assessment by a breast team familiar with male breast cancer. Imaging and a tissue biopsy usually clarify the diagnosis before surgery. Discuss the incision, lymph-node plan, chest appearance, possible reconstruction, drains, arm movement, and when other treatment would begin. Tell the team about medicines and any family history of breast or ovarian cancer.

Arrange medical review for a persistent lump, nipple discharge, a sore that does not heal, nipple pulling inward, or a change in the chest skin. After surgery, contact the team urgently for heavy bleeding, fever, spreading redness, severe swelling, or sudden breathing difficulty.
