Does mastectomy treat inflammatory breast cancer?

Inflammatory breast cancer can cause rapid breast swelling, redness, warmth, skin thickening, or an orange-peel texture. Because cancer cells may involve breast tissue and lymphatic channels, the treatment plan commonly begins with medicines before an operation. If the disease responds sufficiently and surgery is appropriate, a mastectomy removes the affected breast and is generally followed by additional treatment such as radiotherapy or medicines selected for the tumour’s features.

Mastectomy alone is therefore not the whole treatment plan. The exact sequence depends on examination, imaging, biopsy results, lymph-node findings, and markers on the cancer cells. A multidisciplinary breast-cancer team coordinates these decisions.

Arrange prompt assessment with a breast-cancer team if inflammatory breast cancer is suspected or confirmed. Bring your pathology and imaging reports if available. Ask which treatment is planned first, how response will be assessed, whether lymph nodes will be sampled, and what reconstruction timing may be possible. Do not delay appointments because redness or swelling can change quickly.

Seek prompt medical review for new breast redness, rapid swelling, warmth, skin thickening, nipple change, or an underarm lump, especially when symptoms do not settle. During treatment, report fever, sudden breathlessness, severe pain, or rapidly worsening swelling to your clinical team without waiting for the next appointment.
