Male factor infertility can involve a low sperm supply, reduced sperm movement, changes in sperm shape, or difficulty getting sperm into the vagina. Hormone problems, blockage, previous illness or surgery, and some medicines can contribute. Fertility involves both partners, so difficulty conceiving does not by itself identify which factor is involved. Testing helps separate sperm-related factors from ovulation, tubal, uterine or other causes.

Arrange a fertility assessment for both partners rather than testing only one person. A semen analysis is commonly part of the male assessment, and the clinician may repeat it because results can vary. Share medical history, medicines, sexual difficulties, previous operations and lifestyle factors. Avoid starting supplements or hormone treatment without medical advice, because some treatments can reduce sperm production.
