Does breast cancer in men cause breast lump?

A cancerous lump in a man’s breast may feel firm and may be located beneath or near the nipple. It can occur with nipple inversion, skin dimpling, discharge or a change in breast shape. Many breast lumps are caused by conditions other than cancer, so the presence of a lump does not establish a diagnosis. A clinician may use an examination and imaging, followed by a tissue sample when needed.

Make an appointment for any new breast lump, even if it is not painful. Note when you first noticed it, whether it is changing, and whether there are nipple or skin changes. Do not repeatedly press or massage the area. Take a list of medicines and mention any previous breast problems or relevant family history to the clinician.

Seek prompt care for a lump that is growing, a nipple that turns inward, bloody discharge, skin puckering, an open sore, or swelling in the armpit. Urgent help is appropriate for severe pain with redness and fever, particularly if the breast becomes hot or rapidly swollen.

Ask what the examination suggests, which imaging is suitable, whether a biopsy is needed, and when you should expect results. Ask what changes should prompt an earlier review.
