Does malaria cause muscle aches?

Malaria parasites trigger an illness that can affect the whole body. Aching muscles may develop during a fever episode or leave you sore afterwards. The symptom can be mild or tiring, and it may come and go as other symptoms change. Muscle aches alone do not identify the cause; viral infections, dehydration, strenuous activity, and other conditions can also produce them. A recent stay in, or travel from, a malaria-risk area is useful information for a clinician.

If malaria is possible, arrange prompt medical assessment and mention any travel, mosquito exposure, fever pattern, medicines, and pregnancy. Testing may be needed because treatment depends on confirming the infection and assessing its severity. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and use only fever or pain medicine that is suitable for you and taken as directed. Do not delay assessment while waiting for the aches to settle.

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, difficulty breathing, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, a seizure, extreme weakness, or worsening fever after travel to a malaria-risk area. Malaria can become serious quickly, particularly in young children, pregnancy, and people with reduced immunity. If symptoms are severe, do not drive yourself.

Ask whether malaria testing is needed, when results should be available, which pain or fever medicines are appropriate, and what changes should prompt emergency care. Also ask how to prevent mosquito bites and whether anyone who travelled with you needs advice.
