Does lymphoma cause swollen lymph nodes?

Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures found in areas such as the neck, armpits and groin. Lymphoma can enlarge them as abnormal lymph cells accumulate. They may be painless and remain enlarged. Viral or bacterial infections commonly activate nodes, sometimes with tenderness, and inflammation near the node can do the same.

A healthcare professional considers the node’s location, size, texture, movement, tenderness and duration, along with symptoms such as fever, night sweats, fatigue or unexplained weight change. The pattern guides whether monitoring, blood tests, imaging or a biopsy is appropriate.

Note where the swelling is, when it began, whether it is changing and whether you recently had an infection, vaccination or skin injury nearby. Avoid repeatedly checking or squeezing the nodes. Make an appointment if swelling persists, grows, feels hard or fixed, or has no clear explanation.

Do not assume that a swollen node identifies its cause. If testing is needed, a biopsy examines tissue directly; imaging can show the node’s structure and nearby areas, while blood tests provide additional context.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe weakness, fainting, confusion or an acute severe illness. Arrange prompt medical review for persistent or enlarging nodes, nodes above the collarbone, persistent fever, drenching night sweats or unexplained weight change.
