Does lymphoma cause a neck lump?

Lymphoma can enlarge lymph nodes in the neck when abnormal lymph cells collect within them. The lump may be painless and may be noticed above the collarbone or along the side of the neck. A sore throat, dental problem, ear infection, skin infection or other inflammation can also cause a swollen node. A lump cannot be classified by touch alone.

During an assessment, the clinician may ask about its duration, growth, pain, recent infections and associated symptoms. They may examine your mouth, throat, skin and other lymph-node areas. The next step depends on what is found, and may include blood testing, imaging or tissue sampling.

Book an appointment if the lump persists, increases in size, feels firm or fixed, or has no clear explanation. Record when it appeared and whether it changes with an illness. Mention difficulty swallowing, voice change, ongoing cough, fever, night sweats, fatigue or unexplained weight change.

Do not squeeze or massage the area. A clinician can decide whether observation is reasonable or whether testing is needed. If tissue is sampled, laboratory examination helps identify whether lymphoma cells are present and which type of process is involved.

Get urgent help if neck swelling interferes with breathing or swallowing, or if you develop confusion, fainting or severe illness. Seek prompt clinical advice for a persistent lump above the collarbone, rapid enlargement, persistent fever or drenching night sweats. These signs require evaluation, not self-diagnosis.
