Does lymphoedema cause arm or leg swelling?

The lymphatic system normally collects extra fluid from tissues and returns it to the circulation. If lymph vessels or lymph nodes are damaged, blocked, or underdeveloped, fluid can collect in an arm or leg. The limb may feel heavy, tight, full, or less flexible, and rings, watches, shoes, or clothing may feel tighter.

Lymphoedema may develop after cancer surgery or radiotherapy, but other lymphatic problems can also cause it. Swelling that starts suddenly, affects one limb, or comes with pain, warmth, redness, or breathlessness needs medical assessment because those features can signal a different urgent problem.

Arrange an assessment if swelling persists, changes, or affects movement. A clinician may compare both limbs, examine the skin, and ask about surgery, radiotherapy, injury, infection, medicines, and how the swelling changes during the day. Until reviewed, protect the skin from cuts and burns, moisturise as advised, and avoid tight items that leave deep marks. Do not start compression without suitable guidance.

Seek urgent care for sudden limb swelling with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or coughing blood. Contact a clinician promptly if the swollen area becomes hot, red, increasingly painful, or associated with fever, or if the swelling rapidly worsens. These changes may need treatment for infection or another cause rather than routine lymphoedema care.
