Does liver cirrhosis cause abdominal swelling?

Short answer
Abdominal swelling is a common presentation of liver cirrhosis, often caused by fluid collecting inside the abdomen.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common mechanism
- Fluid collecting inside the abdomen, known as ascites.
- Assessment
- Examination, blood tests, and imaging may help find the cause.
What the swelling can mean
As cirrhosis changes the liver, pressure in nearby blood vessels can rise and the body may hold on to salt and water. Fluid can then build up in the abdominal cavity; this is called ascites. The abdomen may feel tight or heavy, clothing may become uncomfortable, and the size may increase gradually. Other signs can include ankle swelling, reduced appetite, or feeling full after eating a small amount. Abdominal swelling has other possible causes, so its appearance alone cannot identify cirrhosis.
What to do next
Arrange a clinical assessment if swelling is new, increasing, or affecting eating or breathing. A clinician may examine your abdomen, review medicines and alcohol history, and arrange blood tests or imaging. Treatment can include reducing salt under medical guidance, adjusting medicines, or removing fluid when needed. Do not start water tablets or sharply restrict fluids without advice, because the safest plan depends on kidney function, blood salts, and the severity of liver disease.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical help for rapidly increasing swelling, severe or new abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, confusion, unusual sleepiness, fainting, or trouble breathing. In someone with cirrhosis, these changes can signal infection, bleeding, or a serious shift in fluid balance and need prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what is causing the swelling, whether you need testing for abdominal fluid infection, how to monitor your weight and abdomen, which medicines or foods to avoid, and which changes should prompt an urgent call.
Questions people ask
Is every swollen abdomen caused by cirrhosis?
No. Gas, constipation, weight change, other liver conditions, and several abdominal problems can also cause swelling.
Can abdominal swelling from cirrhosis go away?
It may improve when the underlying fluid imbalance is treated, but it can return and needs ongoing medical monitoring.
