Does liver cancer cause abdominal swelling?

Liver cancer can affect blood flow through the liver and change the way the body handles fluid. Fluid may collect inside the abdomen, a condition called ascites, causing fullness, tightness, increasing waist size, or discomfort. An enlarged liver or spleen can also contribute to a feeling of pressure.

Abdominal swelling has other possible explanations, including liver disease unrelated to cancer, heart or kidney problems, digestive conditions, infection, and pregnancy. A clinician may examine the abdomen and use blood tests or imaging to find the cause.

Arrange medical review for new, persistent, or increasing swelling, especially with abdominal discomfort, reduced appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, ankle swelling, easy bruising, or breathlessness. Note when it began, whether it changes during the day, and any change in weight, urine, bowel movements, or appetite.

Do not start water tablets, restrict fluids, or make large dietary changes without medical advice. Treatment depends on the cause and may include monitoring, medicines, or draining fluid when clinically appropriate.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly increasing abdominal swelling, intense pain, fever, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, black stools, vomiting blood, or new breathing difficulty. These signs can indicate a complication requiring prompt assessment.

Ask whether the swelling could be fluid, what tests are needed, how to monitor it at home, which food or fluid changes are safe, and which symptoms should prompt immediate care.
