Does lipoma cause skin lumps?

A lipoma usually sits between the skin and deeper tissue. It may feel doughy or rubbery, have a smooth outline, and move slightly when gentle pressure is applied. Many lipomas are not tender and grow slowly. They can occur on the shoulder, back, arm, thigh, or another area where fatty tissue is present. A lump can be easier to notice when clothing rubs over it, but its position or feel alone cannot confirm what it is.

Other lumps can feel similar, including cysts and inflamed or enlarged structures. A clinician may inspect and feel the area, ask how long it has been present, and decide whether imaging or another test is needed.

Book a routine appointment for a new lump, especially if you cannot tell whether it is in the skin or underneath it. Do not squeeze, puncture, or repeatedly press it. Note when you first noticed it, whether it is changing, and whether movement or pressure causes discomfort. If examination supports a lipoma and it is not troublesome, monitoring may be suitable. Removal can be discussed when a lump is painful, restricts movement, catches on clothing, or causes concern; the choice depends on its location, size, depth, and examination findings.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if a lump grows quickly, becomes firm or fixed, develops persistent pain, or causes numbness or weakness nearby. Redness, warmth, marked swelling, drainage, or fever may point to infection or inflammation and should also be assessed. A lump that is deep, unusually large, or changing in appearance needs direct evaluation rather than a home diagnosis. Seek urgent help for severe pain, rapidly increasing swelling, or new weakness.

Ask whether the lump feels consistent with a lipoma, whether an ultrasound or other assessment is appropriate, and what changes should make you return sooner. If removal is considered, ask about the expected scar, recovery, and how the tissue will be checked.
