Does lichen simplex chronicus cause thickened skin?

Lichen simplex chronicus is a scratch-and-itch cycle. Irritation creates an urge to scratch, and scratching increases irritation. Over time, the affected area may develop a thicker texture, more visible skin markings, scaling, or darker or lighter colour. It often appears where a person can easily rub, such as the neck, ankle, lower leg, wrist, or genital skin. Loose, breathable clothing may reduce rubbing, and covering the area at night can make unconscious scratching harder. Seek prompt medical advice if the thickened area is rapidly changing, painful, warm, swollen, bleeding, oozing, or developing pus. Arrange an examination sooner if it is on the eyelid or genital skin, interferes with sleep, or comes with widespread itch, fever, or unexplained weight change. These features can indicate infection, a different inflammatory condition, or another problem that needs direct assessment. Do not assume that every thickened patch is lichen simplex chronicus.
