Does lichen planus cause itchy skin?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin condition that can produce itchy, raised, or flat-topped areas. It may affect the wrists, ankles, lower back, legs, scalp, nails, mouth, or genital skin. Scratching can break the surface and may make the itch cycle harder to settle.

The appearance and location of a rash help distinguish lichen planus from eczema, psoriasis, contact reactions, fungal infections, and other causes of itching. A clinician may examine the skin closely and sometimes recommend a biopsy when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser, keep showers warm rather than hot, and choose loose clothing over areas that rub. Pat the skin dry instead of scrubbing and keep nails short to limit damage from scratching. Do not apply strong steroid or bleaching products without guidance, particularly on thin, genital, or facial skin. A prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment may calm the rash and itch.

See a clinician if itching persists, the rash spreads, sleep is disturbed, or sores develop from scratching. Seek prompt care for painful mouth lesions that limit drinking, genital pain or bleeding, eye symptoms, or a blistering reaction. New nail changes or hair loss also deserve assessment because lichen planus can affect more than visible skin.
