Does laser hair removal treat hypertrichosis?

Hypertrichosis is excess hair growth in areas where hair may be more noticeable than expected. It can be present from birth or develop later, and it is different from hormone-driven hair growth in a typical male pattern. Laser treatment targets pigment in the hair follicle, so it works more readily on darker hair than on white, grey, blonde, or very light red hair. It reduces active growth over a course of appointments; it does not explain why the hair developed or treat a medicine-related or medical trigger.

The treated area can include the face, arms, legs, back, or another site selected after an examination. Hair may look finer or grow more slowly as follicles respond, while untreated follicles can continue producing hair.

Arrange a consultation so the clinician can review when the hair began, its distribution, medicines, family history, and any other symptoms. They may decide that an underlying cause needs assessment before cosmetic treatment. Share your skin tone, history of dark marks or raised scars, tanning, and previous reactions to light-based procedures.

Follow the clinic’s preparation instructions. Avoid plucking or waxing shortly before sessions if instructed, because the follicle needs to be present for the laser to target it. Shaving may be recommended. Protect the area from strong sun and report active irritation, infection, or a new rash before an appointment.

Seek a medical review if excess hair appears suddenly, spreads quickly, or comes with acne, voice changes, irregular periods, scalp hair loss, or other new body changes. These features can point to a hormonal or medication-related issue that laser treatment would not correct. Promptly contact the treating clinic for blistering, marked swelling, worsening pain, or skin colour change after a session.

Ask which hair colours and body areas are suitable for the planned device, whether the pattern of growth needs medical testing, how many visits may be reasonable to assess response, and how your skin tone will be protected during treatment. Ask what to do if regrowth continues or the area becomes irritated.
