Does laser hair removal help with ingrown hairs?

An ingrown hair forms when a hair curls or grows back into the skin, often after shaving, waxing, or friction. The area may develop a raised bump, tenderness, itching, or inflammation. By reducing the number and thickness of hairs that regrow, laser treatment can reduce one trigger for repeated ingrowth. Existing inflammation, infection, scarring, or a different type of bump will not automatically resolve with laser. A clinician can distinguish ingrown hairs from folliculitis, a cyst, or another skin problem and can address infection before cosmetic treatment. Stop and contact the provider after laser if there is blistering, severe pain, or a strong pigment change.
