Does laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy treat ovarian torsion?

Ovarian torsion happens when the ovary twists and may reduce its blood supply. A cyst or other ovarian enlargement can contribute to the twist. In urgent laparoscopy, the surgeon assesses the ovary, untwists it when possible, and decides whether the cyst should be removed or another procedure is needed. The operation is not planned simply as routine cyst treatment: the immediate priority is assessing blood flow and protecting health. The final decision depends on the ovary’s appearance, the cyst, and the person’s circumstances.

If torsion is suspected, go to an emergency department immediately rather than waiting for an outpatient appointment. Sudden one-sided pelvic pain with nausea or vomiting deserves urgent assessment, even if the pain comes and goes. Tell clinicians about known cysts, pregnancy possibility, previous torsion, and medicines. Ask the surgical team what procedures may be needed and how they will consider future ovarian function.

Seek emergency care now for sudden severe pelvic or lower abdominal pain, especially when accompanied by nausea, vomiting, faintness, fever, or marked tenderness.
