Does laparoscopic excision of endometriosis help with pain during sex?

During laparoscopy, a surgeon identifies and removes visible endometriosis tissue while aiming to protect nearby organs. Pain during deep penetration can relate to lesions, inflammation, scarring, or pelvic structures becoming less mobile. Excision may address some of those contributors, but pain can have other causes, including pelvic-floor muscle tension, vulval or vaginal conditions, bladder or bowel problems, and nerve sensitivity. Removing lesions therefore may not resolve every source of discomfort.

Tell your gynaecologist where the pain occurs, whether it is deep or at the entrance, and how it relates to your cycle. Discuss imaging findings, possible disease locations, fertility plans, other treatments, and what recovery may involve. Ask whether pelvic-floor physiotherapy or pain support should be included before or after surgery. Until reviewed, use positions and lubrication that reduce pressure and stop when pain begins.

Arrange assessment for persistent or recurrent pain during sex, especially when it affects intimacy, sleep, work, or daily activity. After surgery, seek prompt medical advice for worsening abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, wound redness or discharge, or difficulty passing urine. Sudden severe pain, fainting, or breathing difficulty needs urgent care. Pain returning after an initial improvement also deserves review.
