Does laminectomy treat spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis means one vertebra has shifted in relation to another. The shift can narrow the space around a nerve and cause back pain, leg pain, tingling, or weakness. Laminectomy removes part of the bone behind the vertebra to free compressed nerves. It does not move the vertebra back into place. If the segment is unstable, or if decompression could increase movement, the surgeon may discuss fusion or another stabilizing procedure. The plan depends on the slip, symptoms, movement on imaging, and overall spine structure.

A spine assessment usually combines a neurological examination with standing or motion X-rays and other imaging when needed. Record what activities trigger leg symptoms, whether leaning forward helps, and whether strength is changing. Physiotherapy and other non-surgical measures may help stable cases. Progressive weakness, persistent nerve pain, or difficulty walking deserves a timely surgical discussion rather than treatment based on the scan alone.

Seek emergency care for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle region, or sudden or worsening weakness in a leg. Contact a clinician promptly for repeated falls or rapidly declining walking ability. These changes can signal increasing nerve compression, regardless of how long the vertebral slip has been present.

Ask whether your slip is stable, whether laminectomy alone could worsen movement, and what fusion would add. Clarify which symptoms are likely to improve, what rehabilitation involves, and how lifting, bending, and sitting may be managed during recovery.
