Does laminectomy treat spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a reduction in the space available for the spinal cord or nerve roots. In a laminectomy, a surgeon removes the back part of one or more vertebrae to widen that space. The procedure may be paired with removal of thickened ligament or other tissue, and fusion may be considered if the spine is unstable or a slip between vertebrae needs support. Laminectomy is more relevant when leg pain, numbness, weakness, or walking limitation comes from nerve compression than when back pain has another source.

A clinician reviews your walking pattern, strength, sensation, reflexes, and imaging before recommending surgery. Less invasive care may include guided exercise, activity changes, medicines, or an injection when appropriate. If symptoms continue, limit walking, or cause progressive weakness, discuss whether decompression offers a reasonable balance of benefit and risk. Share your walking distance, positions that ease symptoms, and any changes in leg function.

Get urgent help for new bladder or bowel problems, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, or rapidly worsening leg weakness. Emergency assessment is also needed after a fall or injury followed by severe back pain, numbness, or loss of movement. Ordinary pain that is stable still deserves review if it is affecting sleep, work, or walking.

Ask which level is narrowed, what symptom the operation is expected to improve, and whether decompression alone is suitable. Ask about fusion, rehabilitation, lifting limits, recovery milestones, and which new symptoms should prompt urgent contact.
