Does laminectomy treat cervical myelopathy?

Cervical myelopathy is spinal cord dysfunction caused by narrowing or another source of pressure in the neck. A laminectomy removes the back portion of selected neck vertebrae, enlarging the canal from behind. It may be combined with removal of a disc or bone spur, fusion to stabilize the spine, or another approach when pressure is mainly at the front. Surgery is intended to prevent further cord injury and may improve walking, hand coordination, pain, or weakness, but existing nerve changes may not fully reverse.

Arrange assessment with a spine specialist when hand clumsiness, balance changes, limb weakness, or electric-shock sensations with neck movement are developing. Examination and imaging show where the cord is compressed and whether the spine is stable. Until assessed, avoid activities that provoke neck impact or forceful manipulation. Keep track of falls, changes in grip, and any difficulty with buttons, writing, or walking.

Seek urgent medical help for rapidly worsening weakness, repeated falls, new loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe symptoms after a neck injury. Sudden inability to use an arm or leg requires emergency care. These signs can indicate significant spinal cord involvement and should not wait for a routine review.

Ask where the spinal cord is compressed, whether laminectomy alone gives enough room, and why fusion or an anterior procedure might be added. Discuss expected effects on balance and hand function, activity limits, rehabilitation, and signs of worsening cord pressure.
