They can also help you make a temporary feeding plan that protects milk supply and your comfort. A clinician decides whether medication or further examination is needed.

Arrange medical advice when mastitis symptoms are significant or worsening, and book lactation support if feeding technique or breast emptying is contributing to discomfort. Feed or express in a way that feels manageable rather than trying to force the breast empty. Rest, drink to thirst, and use cool measures for swelling. Tell the clinician whether symptoms began suddenly, whether one area is affected, and whether you have taken any medicine.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, chills, a rapidly spreading red area, increasing pain, pus, or feeling unwell. You may need assessment for bacterial infection or an abscess.
