Does kyphoplasty treat vertebral compression fracture?

During kyphoplasty, a clinician guides a narrow tube into the affected vertebra, usually using imaging. A small balloon may create a cavity and help lift some of the collapse before bone cement is placed to support the bone. The procedure targets the fractured vertebra; it does not correct every cause of back pain or repair an unrelated spinal problem. Suitability depends on the fracture's age, location, pattern, symptoms, examination, and scan findings.

Start with a medical assessment rather than assuming every spinal fracture needs kyphoplasty. The team may discuss pain control, activity changes, physiotherapy, support for safe movement, and treatment of low bone strength. Kyphoplasty may be considered when pain remains limiting despite appropriate initial care and the imaging matches the symptoms. Ask how long recovery may take, how lifting and bending should be handled, and how future fractures can be prevented.

Seek urgent care after a new back injury if you cannot stand or walk safely, or if pain is severe and sudden. Numbness, worsening leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the inner thighs or buttocks needs immediate assessment because nerve compression may be involved. Fever or feeling acutely unwell with back pain also warrants prompt medical attention.

Ask which vertebra is fractured, whether the fracture is stable, and what the scan shows. Clarify why kyphoplasty is being considered, what alternatives fit your situation, what activity restrictions apply, and how bone health will be assessed.
