Short answer

Knee Swelling is a very common presentation of Knee Osteoarthritis. Irritation inside the joint can increase fluid, while surrounding tissues may feel puffy or tight after activity.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Sudden swelling, fever, marked warmth, injury, or inability to bear weight needs prompt review.

Why the knee may swell

Osteoarthritis can irritate the lining of the knee joint. The joint may then produce extra fluid, creating a soft or full feeling around the kneecap and sides of the knee. Swelling may appear after walking, stairs, kneeling, or another demanding activity and may be accompanied by stiffness or reduced bending.

A swollen knee can also result from an injury, infection, crystal arthritis, or another inflammatory condition. The appearance of swelling does not determine its cause. A clinician may compare both knees, check warmth and movement, and consider the events that came before it.

What may ease a swollen knee

Reduce or split activities that clearly increase swelling, while keeping gentle movement so the knee does not become more stiff. Rest the leg in a comfortable position and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for a short period if this is safe and soothing. Avoid placing ice directly on skin.

A physiotherapist can guide movement and strengthening once the knee tolerates them. Discuss pain-relief options with a healthcare professional, particularly if you have kidney, stomach, heart, or bleeding concerns or take regular medicines.

When swelling needs urgent review

Seek urgent care for a suddenly swollen knee after an injury, inability to bear weight, a locked or deformed joint, or severe pain that develops quickly. A hot, red, increasingly tender knee with fever needs prompt medical assessment because infection must be considered. Arrange a routine review when swelling persists, recurs, or interferes with walking or sleep.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether the swelling feels like fluid inside the joint, what activities may be aggravating it, and which movements are suitable during a flare. Ask whether your medicines or other health conditions affect the safest pain-relief choices.

Questions people ask

Can knee osteoarthritis swelling come and go?

Yes. Irritation and activity can make fluid-related swelling fluctuate, although persistent or recurrent swelling should be assessed.

Is a swollen knee always osteoarthritis?

No. Injury, infection, crystal arthritis, and other conditions can also cause swelling and need different care.
