Does knee arthroscopy treat plica syndrome?

A plica is a fold of joint lining. When it becomes irritated, it can rub as the knee bends and cause pain near the kneecap, clicking, tenderness, or a snapping sensation. These symptoms can resemble problems involving the meniscus or kneecap, so the diagnosis is based on the examination and the overall pattern.

Treatment commonly starts by reducing provoking activities, settling irritation, and improving thigh and hip control. Arthroscopy is considered when symptoms remain limiting, the suspected plica is clearly involved, and a structured non-operative plan has not provided enough improvement.

Note whether stairs, deep bending, running, or prolonged sitting brings on symptoms, and whether there is swelling or true locking. A physiotherapist can guide movement changes and progressive strengthening while the knee settles.

If surgery is proposed, discuss what the surgeon expects to see, whether the plica would be removed or reshaped, and the milestones for walking, exercise, and sport. Follow wound and rehabilitation instructions after any procedure.

Seek prompt care for a hot swollen knee with fever, inability to bear weight, a knee that remains locked, sudden major swelling after injury, or a deformed joint. Arrange review for persistent pain, repeated giving way, or symptoms that interfere with normal activity.

Ask how confident the diagnosis is, what other causes have been considered, how long to try rehabilitation, and what recovery would involve if arthroscopy becomes appropriate.
