Do kidney stones cause painful urination?

A stone moving near the bladder or through the urethra can scratch or irritate the urinary lining. This may cause burning, stinging, urgency, or discomfort while passing urine. Kidney stones may also cause side or groin pain, nausea, or blood in the urine. Painful urination can also occur with a urinary infection and several other conditions, so the symptom alone cannot identify its cause. Fever, chills, or feeling unwell makes infection more concerning.

Arrange a clinical assessment if painful urination is new, persistent, or accompanied by blood, side pain, or difficulty passing urine. A urine sample can help check for infection or blood, while other tests may be considered based on your symptoms. Drink normally unless a clinician has given you a fluid restriction. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics, because the correct treatment depends on the cause and an obstructing stone may need separate care.

Seek urgent medical help for painful urination with fever, chills, severe flank pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, faintness, or very little urine. These symptoms can occur with a urinary blockage or infection that needs rapid treatment. Seek prompt advice during pregnancy, or if you cannot pass urine, have worsening pain, or feel significantly ill.

Ask whether a urine test is needed, how a stone would be checked, which pain relief is safe, and which changes in urine or temperature should bring you back urgently.
