Does kidney cancer cause blood in urine?

Blood may turn urine pink, red, or cola-coloured, although it can be present only on a laboratory test. Kidney cancer may also cause pain in the side, an abdominal swelling, unexplained tiredness, or weight loss, but some people have no symptoms early on. Kidney stones, urinary infections, medicines, and problems in the bladder or prostate can also cause haematuria. The appearance of urine cannot identify the cause by itself.

Arrange a prompt medical review for any blood in urine, even if it appears once or causes no pain. A clinician may ask when it started, whether it is visible, and whether you have urinary or flank symptoms. Testing can include a urine sample, blood tests, and imaging such as an ultrasound or CT scan; further assessment depends on the findings. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice, but mention blood-thinning treatment and any recent strenuous activity.

Seek urgent help if blood in urine comes with severe side or abdominal pain, inability to pass urine, heavy bleeding or clots, faintness, confusion, repeated vomiting, or a high temperature with feeling very unwell. These features can signal blockage, significant bleeding, or a serious infection and should not wait for a routine appointment.

Ask what tests are appropriate, whether the blood was visible or detected only on testing, and which other causes need checking. You can also ask when results will be available, whether imaging uses contrast, and which symptoms should prompt you to return sooner.
