Short answer

Most people with Keratosis Pilaris notice skin bumps, often as small rough plugs around hair follicles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the bumps mean

Keratosis pilaris develops when keratin, a protein in the outer skin layer, collects around hair follicles. The bumps may feel rough like sandpaper and can be skin-coloured, pink, or darker than nearby skin. They commonly appear on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. Dry weather and dry skin can make the texture more noticeable. Mild itching or redness can occur, but the bumps are not usually pus-filled. The condition is harmless and is not contagious.

Ways to smooth the skin

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and moisturise soon after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp. Products containing urea, lactic acid, or salicylic acid may soften the plugs when used as directed. Apply them gradually because irritation can make redness more obvious. Avoid picking, squeezing, and rough scrubs, which can injure follicles and leave darker marks. Improvement is gradual, and ongoing maintenance may be needed because the tendency can return.

When to seek care

Arrange a clinical review if the bumps are painful, rapidly changing, warm, draining pus, or spreading with marked redness. A clinician can check whether another follicle condition, infection, or eczema is present. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, trouble breathing, or a rapidly worsening rash. If the texture persists despite gentle care or is affecting your confidence, a dermatologist can tailor treatment to your skin tone and sensitivity.

Questions for your doctor

Could these bumps be keratosis pilaris or another follicle condition? Which moisturiser or exfoliating ingredient suits my skin? How often should I use it, and what signs mean I should stop? Could treatment reduce discoloration as well as roughness?
