Does joint aspiration treat olecranon bursitis?

Olecranon bursitis affects the fluid-filled sac over the pointed back of the elbow. Repeated leaning, a knock, skin irritation, inflammatory conditions, or infection can make this area enlarge. Aspiration removes some fluid through a needle. The sample may be checked for infection, blood, or crystals, so drainage can be both a symptom-relieving procedure and part of the assessment.

The bursa may refill when the elbow remains under pressure or when inflammation continues. For that reason, aspiration is usually considered alongside protection from pressure and treatment matched to the findings. A clinician may advise a dressing, activity changes, medication, or antibiotics when infection is diagnosed.

Have a clinician examine a new or persistent elbow lump, especially if it interferes with bending the arm. Avoid leaning on the elbow and protect it during activities that cause rubbing. Keep any puncture site clean and follow instructions about dressings after aspiration. Never puncture or squeeze the swelling at home, because this can introduce infection.

Get prompt care if the elbow becomes hot, increasingly red, very painful, or rapidly larger, or if you develop fever, chills, or fluid leaking through the skin. Infection can spread beyond the bursa. Aspiration can support diagnosis, but suspected infection requires treatment directed at the infection rather than drainage alone.

Ask whether aspiration is appropriate for the size and cause of the swelling, whether the sample will be tested, how to avoid pressure on the elbow, and what changes after the procedure should prompt review.
