Does joint aspiration treat bursitis?

A bursa is a small fluid-filled sac that cushions movement near a joint. When it becomes irritated, it can swell and become tender. A clinician may draw out some fluid to reduce pressure and may send it for testing when infection or another cause is suspected.

Drainage does not automatically settle the irritation. Repeated pressure, friction, an injury, inflammatory disease, or infection may need a different response. A bursa can refill if the source of irritation continues, and repeated procedures should be guided by a clinician.

Arrange an examination if the swelling is painful, persistent, or interfering with movement. Explain your work, exercise, kneeling, leaning, or other repeated activities that load the area. Until assessed, reduce the movement that clearly aggravates it and protect the skin from pressure. Use only medicines or home measures that are suitable for you and recommended by a professional.

Seek prompt care for a bursa that is hot, red, rapidly enlarging, or associated with fever, chills, drainage, or feeling unwell. Infection can require treatment beyond aspiration. Sudden severe pain or inability to move the nearby joint also warrants timely assessment.

Ask which bursa is affected, whether fluid testing is needed, what caused the inflammation, and how to reduce pressure without losing strength or movement. Ask when to return if the swelling refills.
