Does IVF treat diminished ovarian reserve?

Diminished ovarian reserve means the ovaries may have fewer remaining eggs than expected for age. Tests such as anti-Müllerian hormone, follicle count, and follicle-stimulating hormone can provide clues, but they do not describe every part of fertility. Reserve is different from ovulation: someone may still release eggs while having a lower reserve.

IVF uses medicines to stimulate follicles, collects eggs, and fertilises them in a laboratory. It cannot create new eggs or reverse the underlying reserve finding. The number of eggs collected and the number of embryos formed can vary, so the plan needs individual review.

Ask a fertility specialist to interpret the results alongside age, menstrual history, previous treatment, and partner testing. The clinic may outline a stimulation protocol, monitoring visits, egg collection, fertilisation, embryo culture, and embryo transfer. Discuss whether the aim is to proceed promptly, preserve eggs or embryos, or consider donor eggs. Review medicine instructions carefully and tell the team about all conditions and prescriptions.

Arrange fertility advice after a diminished-reserve result, especially if pregnancy is a current goal or cycles are changing. Seek urgent help during treatment for severe abdominal pain, marked swelling, vomiting, breathing difficulty, fainting, or heavy bleeding. A positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding also needs prompt assessment.

Ask which results support the diagnosis, how often they should be repeated, and what they suggest about stimulation. Discuss the time-sensitive parts of your plan, embryo testing if relevant, alternatives if few eggs are retrieved, and how you will decide whether to continue.
